Did you know that toxins fuel acne?
This will be the topic of today’s article – detoxification and its connection to problematic skin.
What is detoxification?
Detoxification is a natural physiological process that helps the body eliminate unwanted chemicals that can harm it.
Detoxification depends on various systems and organs and requires a wide range of nutrients to be successful. If this process is disrupted in some way and the body cannot effectively eliminate toxins through the intestines, urine, or sweat, they will try to exit through the skin.
This means that any rashes, eczema, pimples, or psoriasis can result from poor waste elimination.
The liver is one of the primary organs responsible for detoxification. It plays a role in over 400 vital functions in the body, including hormone production and protein synthesis. The liver also produces bile, which is essential for digestion and breaking down fats. Often, people with acne have an “overloaded” liver, and the body cannot cleanse itself effectively.
What does this mean?
If you suffer from acne, have many pimples, and inflamed skin, I’m sure you feel awful, especially if you’ve been trying to solve the problem for a long time. However, you need to understand that this indicates your liver is not functioning optimally. Consequently, not only your skin but also other organs or systems in your body are affected. This is because the liver supports almost every organ in the body and is vital for survival.
Apart from acne, you likely experience other complaints as well. Here are some symptoms that indicate increased toxicity in the body:
- Abdominal pain, bloating, and a feeling of heaviness, especially after consuming fatty foods
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Skin itching and acne
- Pimples predominantly on the cheeks and forehead
- Depression and mood swings
- Yellowish tint to the skin or eyes
- Frequent nausea or vomiting
- Frequent headaches or migraines
- Difficulty sweating
- Bad breath
- Skin pigmentation
- Bruising easily
- Cracked heels
- Chronic fatigue
- Overweight
- Allergies
You don’t necessarily need to have all these symptoms, but if you recognize more than 4-5 of them, it’s a strong indication that your liver function is impaired, and you should take better care of it.
What can you do?
- The first step is to reduce the number of toxins your liver has to process. This is easier said than done because toxins are everywhere—in food, water, the environment, and even stress and negative thoughts create them:
- Avoid all processed and packaged foods, particularly white flour, sugar, margarine, and refined fats, including cooking oil.
- Stop or drastically reduce alcohol, juices (including fresh fruit juices).
- Reduce the intake of saturated fats (cheese, dairy, fatty meats).
- Eat plenty of seasonal vegetables, especially leafy greens and root vegetables.
- Drink clean, filtered water.
- Minimize the use of plastic wherever possible.
2. Support your liver's function. Here are some ideas:
- Start your day with warm lemon water
Every morning, drink a glass of warm water with the juice of half a lemon on an empty stomach (you can use a straw to protect your teeth). Lemon stimulates the production of bile, which aids in more effective detoxification. This can also help if you suffer from chronic constipation, another contributor to toxicity.

- Incorporate liver-friendly foods
The liver loves foods like beets, leafy greens, artichokes, apples, lemons, plums, avocados, and seaweed, which are rich in trace elements necessary for the phases of detoxification.
- Use supportive herbs
Some of the best and most easily accessible herbs for liver support include milk thistle (also known as silymarin), which grows in many places around the world, as well as dandelion. Always consult a healthcare provider about possible side effects of specific herbs.
Some may wonder, “Can I cleanse my liver by fasting for a few days or drinking only freshly squeezed juices?”
The answer is NO. The liver goes through TWO phases of detoxification, and it requires a variety of nutrients from food to complete these processes successfully. Without these nutrients, detoxification cannot occur effectively.

I’ll end with a thought by Peter Deunov, a Bulgarian philosopher and spiritual teacher:
“To be healthy, joyful, and well-read, you need absolute purity—both physical and spiritual.”
